4 Basic Rules to Be Happier and Live a More Fulfilling Life
Many of us are in a constant race to find happiness. Yet, it’s those who try hardest that find it more difficult to attain.
A wise man once said, “It is the very pursuit of happiness that thwarts happiness.”
That man was Viktor Frankl. A prominent Jewish psychiatrist and Nazi concentration camp survivor.
In his great book, Man’s Search for Meaning, Frankl said that there’s one difference between those who survive and those who perish:
They find meaning in the situation.
So the question is, how can we find meaning in life?
So if you’re telling yourself “I hate my life”, below we’re going to go over 4 strategies you can use to find meaning and fulfilment in life, rather than constantly failing to find true inner peace and contentment.
The past is gone, the future hasn’t arrived. The only thing that exists is right now. Yet so many of us spend our time ruminating about what’s already happened or what will happen.
Spiritual guru Osho says that if we continue to do this, we’ll be miserable our whole lives:
“That is the simple secret of happiness. Whatever you are doing, don’t let past move your mind; don’t let future disturb you. Because the past is no more, and the future is not yet.
To live in the memories, to live in the imagination, is to live in the non-existential. And when you are living in the non-existential, you are missing that which is existential.
Naturally you will be miserable, because you will miss your whole life.” – Osho
Eckhart Tolle echoes these sentiments. He says we should always “accept” the present moment for what it is:
“Always say “yes” to the present moment. What could be more futile, more insane, than to create inner resistance to what already is? what could be more insane than to oppose life itself, which is now and always now? Surrender to what is. Say “yes” to life — and see how life suddenly starts working for you rather than against you.” – Eckhart Tolle
2) Embrace the suck
Frankl was a concentration camp prisoner. Even if what you’re going through is tough, it’s still possible to find meaning and purpose in those situations.
Spiritual guru Osho says that difficult emotions sadness give us more depth and experience in life:
“Sadness gives depth. Happiness gives height. Sadness gives roots. Happiness gives branches. Happiness is a tree going into the sky, and sadness is the roots going down into the womb of the earth. Both are needed, and the higher a tree goes, the deeper it goes, simultaneously. The bigger the tree, the bigger will be its roots. In fact, it is always in proportion. That’s its balance.” – Osho
Similarly, modern day Buddhist master Pema Chödrön says these we shouldn’t shy away from negativity, because it’s in these moments that we can learn valuable lessons:
“…feelings disappointment, embarrassment, irritation, resentment, anger, jealousy, and fear, instead of being bad news, are actually very clear moments that teach us where it is that we’re holding back.
They teach us to perk up and lean in when we feel we’d rather collapse and back away. They’re messengers that show us, with terrifying clarity, exactly where we’re stuck.
This very moment is the perfect teacher, and, lucky for us, it’s with us wherever we are.” – Pema Chödrön
3) Realize that you’re unique and there’s no one else you
So many of us get stuck into comparing ourselves with others. We place our happiness on other people accepting us.
The truth is, inner peace will never come from impressing others. It’s superficial and means that you don’t accept yourself.
The first step to acceptance is to realize that you’re utterly unique and it’s impossible to compare yourself to anyone.
Perhaps these words from Osho will make you realize why comparison is impossible:
“Comparison is a disease, one of the greatest diseases. We are taught from the very beginning to compare. Your mother starts comparing you with other children. Your father compares. The teacher says, “Look at Johnny, how well he is doing, and you are not doing good at all!”
From the very beginning you are being told to compare yourself with others. This is the greatest disease; it is a cancer that goes on destroying your very soul. Each individual is unique, and comparison is not possible.
I am just myself and you are just yourself. There is nobody else in the world to be compared with. Do you compare a marigold with a roseflower? You don’t compare. Do you compare a mango with an apple? You don’t compare.
You know they are different – comparison is not possible.” – Osho
Man is not a species. Each man is unique. There has never been any individual you before and there will never be again. You are utterly unique. This is your privilege, your prerogative, life’s blessing – that it has made you unique.”
4) Focus on what you enjoy doing
Suzy Kassem says that it’s far more satisfying to focus on what you’re passionate about, rather than comparing yourself to others, or constantly striving for success:
“Whatever your passion is, keep doing it. Don’t waste time chasing after success or comparing yourself to others. Every flower blooms at a different pace. 16 Ways to Be Happier and Live a More Fulfilling Life
A life of regret is no life at all. Sure, we all have regrets for things we've done, mistakes made and opportunities lost. But if we make a conscious decision every day to minimize those regrets, we will lead a happier more fulfilling life. And hopefully those around us will as well.
These sixteen ways to live a happier more fulfilling life come from my past and present experiences from getting it right, as well as getting it wrong. They are delivered in no particular order.
Prioritize your time wisely.
As we all know, life moves at the speed of light. Time is our most precious asset. Wake up each day with a plan to accomplish something meaningful. Something you will feel good about when you turn out the light that night.
Build relationships over possessions.
You won't be taking your possessions with you nor are they a meaningful source of lasting happiness. The relationships you build and the lives you impact will be your legacy.
Take what you can from life, but always give back.
There is nothing wrong with investing in yourself and your future. For pursuing success in all areas of your life. But one of the best ways to seek happiness is through service to others. Remember that giving time is more valuable than giving money.
Be accountable for your words and actions.
Accountability is the path to true accomplishment. Personal accountability is infectious and others in your life will follow suit. Always consider the consequences of your words and actions. Not doing so can be a fast track to regret.
Be disciplined in your personal and professional life.
Being accountable requires discipline. Discipline is the only way to discover your best personal self: the cross section between purpose, talent and effort. Discipline leads to accomplishing goals and avoiding bad decisions.
Expunge hate from your heart.
Life is too short. This too requires discipline. Hate will consume you, exhaust you and distract from the positive aspects of your life. Put your ego aside and replace it with humility.
Forgive yourself and others quickly.
We all make mistakes, hurt those we love and meander off the path of righteousness at times. The faster we forgive ourselves and others the more time and energy we have for love.
Your family relies on you to be strong, to lead, mentor and provide for them. Making time for work and hobbies is important, but every now and then we need to remember that making more money or the extra round of golf can wait.
Find purpose in your life's work.
Without purpose it's hard to truly be passionate. And without passion it's impossible to inspire and lead others. Living a purpose-driven life is the foundation of fulfillment and happiness. Find your purpose and pursue it relentlessly.
Chase your dreams and never quit.
As a former Navy SEAL, the never-quit attitude is ingrained in me forever. Just make sure you are pursuing the right “dreams” that will add value to your life and others. Dreams that are aligned with your purpose.
Pursue passions bigger than yourself.
If we don't break outside our comfort zones and find pursuits that leave a positive impact on the world, we live a very small life.
I often find this very hard to do, but sometimes we just have to let go and have a little faith. There are things simply our control and we can drive ourselves crazy trying to contain them.
Lead by example on and off the battlefield.
We all have the opportunity to lead in our lives. At home, work, in our communities. But leadership requires consistency of character. Actions speak louder than words.
Protect those who can't protect themselves.
This doesn't mean we all have to grab a weapon and head down range. It can come in the form of a simple gesture. Don't stand on the sidelines with your smart phone. Do something.
Strive to improve a little bit every day.
If we can attempt to improve ourselves even 1% each day, at the end of a year we will be 37x better than when we started. Improvement requires regular learning, feedback and reflection. But don't forget to take action as well.
Leave no regrets on the battlefield of life.
As Tecumseh said in his poem “Death Song”:
“When it comes your time to die, be not those whose hearts are filled with the fear death, so that they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die a hero going home.”

Maybe it is because when we see things in a list format, our brain interprets them as a set of instructions or rules that must be followed.
The proliferation of articles about happiness as of late has been astonishing. Everybody is coming up with the magic formula for finding happiness. I don’t know about you, but I need to keep things simple and in perspective at all times.
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a simple set of instructions for living a happy and fulfilled life? How about an instruction manual for life?
Unfortunately, things are not that easy. However, there are techniques and tips you can use in your everyday life that can help you find happiness and fulfillment as you go through the journey of life.
Take a look at the list below.
Far too many of us are always over analyzing and looking for the most complicated way of doing things in life. For the most part, life is meant to be simple – a walk through the park, a simple yes or no answer or a quiet evening with the family.
Don’t try and clutter your life with unnecessary decisions by making everything complicated and complex. Keep it simple!

Practice being satisfied
How many times have you heard someone say, “If only I had a few more dollars I’d…” or “If I just had another day off I could…”?
Many people don’t know how to be satisfied with what life gives them. They are so busy wanting more that they squander what life has already given them.
Beware of indecision
Nobody said life is easy and sometimes, you have to make the tough choices. Never put off a decision that you can make today. You may miss some of the best and most exciting opportunities in the world because you were indecisive. Successful people didn’t get where they were at by prolonging or going back and forth on decisions!
You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it here again:
It only takes a few muscles to smile!
You would be surprised at how well being cheerful to others can spread wildfire. We live in a society where it seems that glumness is the rule of order. A simple smile or kind word can spread through our culture wildfire.
You don’t have to love everyone you encounter, so learn to people. Often,you won’t agree with everything they do or maybe all of their beliefs. By learning to get along with them, you will open your mind up to change. It is a critical trait that is absolutely necessary in today’s world.
Live and let live
Is it really your concern what the guy across the street wants to do with his life or who he wants to share his life with?
Learn to live your life to the fullest and let others do the same. None of us is above anyone else and none of us should think we should be allowed to dictate how other people should live their life.
Adversity can be one of the most powerful teachers we will ever have in our lives. You will learn so much about life by overcoming adversity and learning how to face it head on. Adversity often comes dressed in many different outfits, but you will change your life by learning how to deal with it and prosper from it.
Don’t take yourself so seriously
Here is a secret: it’s ok to be a little goofy now and then!
You only get one shot at this life, so make the most of it. Have some fun and show your children and those around you that you know how to have fun. You aren’t the greatest gift to mankind this world has ever had so don’t act it! You may find you add years to your life, not to mention a ton of laughter!
Have a sense of humor
Laughter has been shown to help people live longer, lower prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, and help them relate to people from around the world.

Be objective in your decision-making and risk-taking. Know the facts and avoid letting racial, social or any other type of bias influence your decisions. Great leaders perform their best when they act facts, not on emotion or prejudices. Become a great leader in your life.
You will make mistakes. In fact, you will make so many mistakes you will never be able to list them all. Learn that mistakes happen and the best thing you can do is to learn from them. Don’t spend your entire life dwelling on a mistake you made years ago – learn from it and move on. The world isn’t going to wait while you live in the past.
Stop beating yourself up over things that happened in the past, the things you did or didn’t do, and mistakes you may have made with others.
Forgiving yourself is a skill so few of us have the ability to accomplish. It’s such a shame that we spend a lifetime living in the past and never make it to our full potential in the future. Forgive yourself and, just as importantly, forgive others.
It may seem a rather long list, but I encourage you to read it and then refer back to it every now and then. You’ll see each one ties into the others in some fashion and that these simple steps really do help you live a more meaningful, happy and fulfilled life.

1. Treat every day as a beautiful gift
Hands up if you countdown the days until Friday? We’re wishing away more than half of our week while simultaneously lamenting that ‘life is too short’. We’re saving our favourite things for ‘a special occasion’ which automatically sends a message to our mind that today will be ordinary.
Make it a habit to wake up with an appreciation for the brand new day you’ve been given — a new amazing opportunity to experience life, grow, eat, laugh, give, explore, dance, dream, create and discover what it feels to be you.
2. Learn to open up and lean on people
Many of us are scared of being vulnerable and authentic — of being seen for who we really are, weaknesses and all. It’s okay to be seen without all the pretences; without all your social masks. By opening up and being your true self, and asking for help when you need it, you automatically give other people permission to do the same. You create a better world through leading by example.
3. Practice the art of acceptance
If you are not yet living your ideal life, make peace with this fact while you work towards your goals. If you struggle against each day, resenting each task you need to complete, it will drain all of your precious energy leaving nothing left in the tank to go after your dreams. Do things with a happy heart and a light-touch, and you will feel freer and more energised.
4. Make time to get in touch with your soul
Your soul is your eternal essence — it’s who you really are underneath the chatter of your monkey mind, the social masks you wear, and the titles and roles you hold. Get in touch with your soul each week through meditation, writing a journal, spending time in nature, or making time to just sit and soak up the world without judgment for a few moments.
5. See the light in people
People may do things which frustrate, hurt or anger you, or they may have nothing in common with you at all — but you can choose to see beyond these external factors and focus on the common humanity and mortality you both share. You are both souls in human bodies trying to navigate the world at this point in time in the best way you know how. Strive to accept and forgive other people whenever you can.
6. Let your emotions be your guide, but not your identity
When people experience strong negative emotions anger, jealousy or pain, they usually do one of two things — bury their emotions deep in their subconscious, or get so caught up in their emotions that they are consumed by them and adopt them as part of their ongoing identity.
Neither choice is healthy — instead, when a strong negative emotion arises, learn to observe the feeling (the act of observation immediately disassociates you from the emotion) and ask yourself what it is trying to teach you. Do you need to work on yourself and grow into a more resilient and peaceful person, or do you need to make crucial changes to your life situation?
7. Open your mind to new possibilities and leave room for surprises
So much can happen in a single day — you could meet the right person, stumble across a new opportunity, come up with a life-changing idea, move jobs, move houses or move countries.
While it’s worthwhile clarifying your desires and making plans, keep a little room in your heart and mind for the unexpected — things might not go to plan, and that might be the best possible outcome.
8. Give to give, not to receive
There is something so beautiful about giving from a place of pure love, without conditions or expectations — to feel someone else’s happiness as your own. Try to give more without seeking anything in return, and notice how the positive feelings you experience from seeing someone else’s joy and comfort are more than enough return on your investment.
9. Be led by joy, not fear
So many people make decisions their fears, rather than following their intuition, interests and passions. You are a once-in-a-humankind combination of talents and quirks and there will never again be anyone you. When you make decisions what you enjoy and what feels right with your soul, you light up and the whole world benefits.
10. Speak and think in positive terms
The world is a reflection of your dominant beliefs. If you constantly focus on and complain about your problems, struggles and worries, you will perpetuate the same circumstances over and over again.
If you start to shift your focus towards the more positive aspects of your life and all of the things that could go right, you will immediately start to experience more good fortune and positive outcomes.
11. Don’t mistake making a living with making a life
Take a good look at your life in all areas — are you making time for loved ones, friendships, health and wellbeing, travel, self-growth, fun and joy outside of work? If your answer is no, you may need to reassess your priorities and set new boundaries to create a fulfilling and sustainable life balance.
12. Give up the word ‘should’
So much of our unhappiness stems from feeling we are not living up to the standard definition of success, the status quo, media standards and expectations — or that life and other people are not living up to our expectations of how things should be. If we let go of preconceived notions about what we should be doing with our lives, and give up our rigid expectations of how other people should act, we will instantly become freer and happier.
13. Decide to accept yourself no matter what
Love yourself on the good days — and love yourself on the bad days too.
Love yourself when things go to plan, you light up the room, and kick all of your goals — and love yourself when you make mistakes, succumb to bad habits, and let your fears get the better of you.
Unconditional self-love gives you the strength and courage to try new things and go after your dreams, because you know that no matter what the outcome, you will still love and accept yourself regardless.
14. Embrace a new level of uncertainty
Tony Robbins once said, “The quality of your life is in direct proportion to the amount of uncertainty you can comfortably deal with.”
Too often we hold ourselves back from taking risks, going after our dreams and creating the life we want to live, because we don’t know exactly how we’re going to get there or whether it will work out.
We keep ourselves secure in the safety of our comfort zones and the ‘known’ — without recognizing that even these safe circumstances could change at any moment without warning, so in many ways we are no more secure in the known — but we are robbing ourselves of the chance to create our dreams and live our ideal life.
15. Redefine your definition of failure
What if, instead of seeing it as a failure when we give something a go and it doesn’t work out, we see it as a victory that we tried in the first place? Perhaps the word failure would be more aptly used in situations where we don’t attempt things at all, because we’re ruled by fear, self-doubt and the lure of mediocracy.
You didn’t fail when you went on a date and it didn’t work out — you succeeded at putting yourself out there in the world where true love is found.
You didn’t fail when you went for an interview and didn’t get offered the job — you successfully make a worthwhile attempt to improve your circumstances and you gained vital lessons from the experience.
Apply this new way of thinking to everything in your life.

A lot of times, our lack of motivation stems from the habit of dwelling on the past. This gives rise to fear and regrets, preventing us from making progress in the present day.

I turned 30 on April 14, 2016, and couldn’t feel happier or more alive. As Ariele and I complete our downsizing process by transporting furniture and remaining keepsakes from Boston, MA to Front Royal, VA I found myself reflecting on my three decades of life.
Life is a rollercoaster; there are a lot of ups, downs and unexpected turns. Through it all I’ve learned various life lessons that, when practiced religiously, will lead to a happier, more fulfilling life. As I sit in the back of our truck, I put pen to paper to help drop some knowledge on lessons I've learned.
While it may sound a lot easier said than done, here are 30 ways to nurture a healthy, happy life.
- Smile and laugh everyday. Choose to make the day worth living.
- Let go of pain. You can always remember the past, but you only get one shot for today.
- You are in control of your emotions. Don’t let others tell you how to feel and don’t expect someone to change the way you feel.
- Stay weird. There’s only one you. Be unique. Be the black sheep.
- Value experiences, not material objects. Declutter yourself and fill your mind with memories that can’t be taken away.
- You didn’t get here by yourself. Appreciate those around you that helped you get where you are today.
- Be your biggest fan. You’re stuck with yourself so learn to love you.
- Enjoy your successes. You earned it.
- Know how to bounce back from failure. Fail early and fail often. Learn and adapt.
- Do what you love and love what you do. Find a way to make your passion your life’s purpose. If you're not sure how to do this, then keep trying.
- You only have one body. Your body's a temple. Worship it and keep it healthy.
- Take ownership for your actions. We all make mistakes. There’s no use in blaming others. Own up and move on.
- Surround yourself with others that make you feel good. If you’re in a toxic relationship, then you have the choice to get out. You deserve the right to be happy.
- Find a partner that makes you the best version of yourself. You deserve to be happy. The “one” will truly want this for you as well.
- Never give up on your dreams. Anything is possible. You just have to believe it and keep after it even if it’s not easy.
- Be patient. Things take time. Rushing leads to errors. If it’s meant to happen it’ll happen.
- Stop talking and listen. Engage, don’t broadcast. The best conversations start with listening.
- Don’t let others bring you down. Believe in yourself. If you think it’s possible, then that’s all that matters.
- Don’t sweep problems under a rug. Ignoring problems can lead to build ups that are set to explode. Take the time to understand what happened and why.
- Step your comfort zone. Try something new. You may it.
- Know how to adjust when things don’t go your way. Things rarely end up the way you planned it. Learn to be open to new ideas and opportunities.
- Genuine gratitude goes a long way. Take the time to make someone else’s day brighter. Positive energy spreads wildfire.
- It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. It doesn’t matter if you fall. Pick yourself back up and finish what you started.
- Live within your means. Debt will consume your happiness. If you can’t afford it, then you don’t need it.
- Give without expecting in return. Positive deeds always find a way back to you. Don’t expect it. It will find its way back.
- Have a positive mental attitude. Negativity is a disease. Positive energy will help you through any situation you encounter.
- Manifest your dreams into reality. The mind is a powerful tool. If you’re driven and consistent in approach, then you’ll continue getting closer to achieving what you want.
- You can’t control others. We all have free will. You may not always agree with those around you (family, friends, strangers), but you have to respect their decisions.
- Learn from your mistakes. Your best teacher is your last mistake. Every misstep is a growth opportunity. Sulking or wallowing in self pity won’t get you anywhere. Take the time to understand what went wrong and what you would do differently in the future.
- A boat floats until it sinks. As long as you’re still breathing, there’s still a chance to turn things around. Giving up should never be an option.
