We all want to be happy. Yet, at the same time, we’re constantly doing things that stand in the way of our own happiness. That is, in many ways, we’re our own happiness saboteurs.

The good news is that once you become aware of the actions that you’re taking on a regular basis which get in the way of your happiness, you can make the choice to stop doing them. Below you’ll discover 12 things to stop doing if you want to be happy.

1. Stop Being a Victim. In order to be happy, you have to stop acting a victim. Victims blame others for the predicaments that they find themselves in, they feel powerless to change their circumstances, and they’re constantly waiting for someone or something to come rescue them.

Move from seeing yourself as a victim to seeing yourself as a creator, and then start creating the life that you want. Here are three blog posts that I wrote which will help you to shift your mindset from that of a victim to that of a creator:

2. Stop If-Then Thinking. Srikumar S. Rao, Ph.D., is a former business school professor and the author of several books, including “Happiness at Work: Be Resilient, Motivated, and Successful No Matter What”.

Dr. Rao explains that most people have a long list of things that they believe have to happen before they can be happy. He calls this “if-then” thinking. Here are some examples:

  • If I get a promotion, then I’ll be happy.
  • If I lose weight, then I’ll be happy.
  • If I find someone to share my life with, then I’ll be happy.

He argues that you need to stop insisting that things go a certain way before you can be happy. Dr. Rao adds that happiness is something that’s innately within you. Your happiness is not contingent on anything else.

3. Stop Being a Pessimist. In her book, “The How of Happiness”, Sonja Lyubomirsky, Ph.D.–professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside–, lays out 12 happiness enhancing strategies. One of these is cultivating optimism.

Dr. Lyubomirsky recommends that you keep a journal in which you imagine and write about your best possible future. In addition, she indicates that you should get into the habit of looking for the bright side to every situation.

Happy people don’t pretend that everything is fine even when it isn’t. However, instead of dwelling on what they lost or on what went wrong they quickly realize that things could have been worse, and they start looking for the silver lining to whatever situation they find themselves in.

In addition, instead of telling themselves that nothing will ever change, happy people are hopeful about the future and that things will get better.

4. Stop Multitasking. When you multitask you’re trying to do several things at once, which means that your attention is divided and you’re not fully focused on anything that you’re doing.

However, in order to be happy you have to place all of your attention on the task you’re involved in.

That is, whatever you’re doing–even if it’s just washing the dishes–you should be fully involved with the act.

Harvard researchers conducted a study involving 2,200 people. Participants in the study were asked at random times how they were feeling.  The researchers found that what mattered in determining how happy the participants felt at any given moment in time was not what they were doing, but rather the degree of attention that they were bringing to the task at hand.

5. Stop Chasing Perfection. Tal Ben-Shahar, Ph.D., once taught the most popular course at Harvard University. It was a course on happiness. In his book, “The Pursuit of Perfect: How to Stop Chasing Perfection and Start Living a Richer, Happier Life”, Dr. Ben-Shahar explains that chasing perfection may be the number one internal obstacle to finding happiness.

Dr. Ben-Shahar argues that instead of being a perfectionist, you should aim for being an optimilist. Here’s the difference between the two:

  • Perfectionism is the neurotic belief that everything about you and your environment has to be perfect.
  • On the other hand, Optimilism is setting high standards which are grounded in reality; accepting that failure is a natural part of the process of achieving goals; and knowing how to find value and satisfaction in an imperfect performance.

While perfection is a destination at which you’ll never arrive, optimilism is about focusing on the journey and being happy with doing your best as you strive to achieve your goals.

6. Stop Dwelling on the Past. Feeling haunted by the past, and focusing on personal experiences that were aversive or unpleasant is toxic.

Rehearsing old dissatisfactions leads to feelings of anger, shame, and regret. These emotions, in turn, can prevent you from taking the steps necessary to create joy in the present. Release the ghosts of the past so that you can stop robbing yourself of present opportunities.

7. Stop Living in the Future. While thinking of the future is fundamental to well-being and positive functioning, focusing on future goals and rewards at the expense of the present is not conducive to happiness. People who have an excessive future orientation have a tendency to do the following:

  • They tend to be workaholics;
  • They tend to neglect their friends and family:
  • They refuse to take time for the occasional self-indulgence;
  • They tend to put their happiness “on hold” while they strive for something which they think will make them happy in the future; and so on.

The best approach is to balance enjoying the here-and-now with working toward building a good future for yourself. The activities which are most conducive to happiness are those which combine present and future gains.

As an illustration, going to a dance-based exercise class which you enjoy provides the present gain of the pleasure that you get from taking the class, with the future gain of fitness and health.

8. Stop Holding Grudges. You’ve probably heard all of the sayings related to holding grudges. Here are two of my favorites:

  • “Holding a grudge is drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.” – William Shakespeare
  • “Hanging onto resentment is letting someone you despise live rent-free in your head.” — Ann Landers

Letting go of grudges—or forgiving—doesn’t mean that what the other person did was OK. It just means that you’ve decided that you will no longer allow it to interfere with your happiness.

9. Stop Focusing On Your Weaknesses. Instead of focusing on your weaknesses, play to your strengths.

Research done in the area of positive psychology has shown that in order to be happy you need to identify your strengths–the things that you love to do and that you’re naturally good at–, and then put them into practice as often as you can. Here are the benefits of focusing on your strengths:

  • People who focus on their strengths are happier;
  • They’re more confident and have higher levels of self-esteem;
  • They have more energy;
  • They are more resilient;
  • They are more engaged; and
  • They are more ly to achieve their goals.

Although you shouldn’t ignore your weaknesses, especially those weaknesses which could hold you back, it’s a question of emphasis. Manage your weakness but focus on your strengths.

10. Stop Waiting for the Right Time. When are you going back to school to get that degree you’ve always wanted? When are you going to take that writer’s workshop you’re always talking about? When are you going to start your own business? When are you going to take some time off to travel?

A lot of people would answer the questions above with the following: “Well, now’s not the right time.” People who are always waiting for the right time are stuck in a perpetual limbo of believing that the “right time” will come. And limbo is not a happy place.

The reality is that there is no such thing as “the right time”. The only time that you have is now. Beginning makes it the right time.

11. Stop Living Mindlessly. Ellen Langer, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology and author of the book “Mindfulness”. Dr. Langer’s research shows that mindfulness is one of the main keys to happiness. She defines mindfulness as “the simple act of actively noticing new things and drawing new distinctions.”

Dr. Langer explains that the process of drawing new distinctions produces a feeling of engagement. She adds that “research has shown that mindfulness is figuratively and literally enlivening. It’s the way you feel when you’re feeling passionate.”

One way to be  more mindful is to question procedures and regulations. Instead of simply accepting that “this is the way it’s always been done”, ask yourself if there’s a better way. Relinquish your preconceived mindsets, notice what you’re doing, and then act your new observations.

12. Stop Holding Out for the Big Stuff. Happy people notice the small things: when the barista at the coffeehouse makes a heart shape on the cappuccino foam; the little kid in the park gleefully chasing a soccer ball; little acts of courtesy from strangers, holding the elevator; and so on.

The big things in life–weddings, graduations, job promotions, the birth of a child–are few and far between. Life is made up of small moments. Appreciating easy-to-come-by pleasures and finding joy in the simple things is associated with a feeling of overall gladness. So stop holding out for the big stuff and start counting small blessings.

Last year, the Journal of Happiness Studies published research by Michael Minkov and Michael Harris Bond that claims happiness has a genetic component — some people are just programmed to be happier.

But, that doesn’t mean you can’t turn a bad day around. Regardless of what your genes dictate, there are a few time-tested ways to improve your happiness.

Stop doing these ten things and you’ll be well on your way to a happier you. 

1. Dwelling on the past

Focusing too much on past events doesn’t allow you to live in the present or strive for the future. You can’t change the past and focusing on something without a solution is sure to put you in a melancholy mood. It’s better to live in the present, and to channel your energies to what you can do as opposed to what you can’t.

2. Being complacent

It's important to focus on what you have right now, but you can attain sustainable happiness by thinking about what you want in the future and setting the groundwork to get there. Whether it's for something major  working toward a new job or as minor as starting a new hobby, expanding your skills could lead to new and exciting opportunities.

3. Spending hours on social media

Recent research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine concluded that social media usage and depression have a symbiotic relationship.

Researchers cited what we all know about social media, but sometimes forget to acknowledge — people post the best versions of themselves online. This leads to envy, and envy leads to despair.

Remember that everyone does things at his or her own pace. Turn off your screen and start living your own life, not vicariously through others.

4. Forgetting about JOMO

Social media causes FOMO — the fear of missing out. Instead, think about JOMO — the joy of missing out. Practice mindfulness, which is the mental state of being completely aware and engaged in the present. Being mindful opens you up to experiencing new things that you have otherwise overlooked — and, just as importantly, often blocks out unneeded distractions.

5. Overlooking small joys 

Nice weather. A cute puppy running toward you. A really great run. There are 24 hours in a day, and during that time, something pleasant is bound to happen, if only for a minute. Show appreciation for the little things in life.

6. Staying on the couch

Exercise has long been linked with happiness. When you exercise, your brain releases endorphins and monoamines. These brain chemicals help the body deal with pain, stress and certain mental disorders anxiety. There’s a reason why “runner’s high” has become a household term: Exercising makes you feel better. 

7. Letting unpleasant events affect your whole day

All too often, people subconsciously choose to be angry. Little things bother us, and we let that negative energy seep into our entire day. Unpleasant events happen to everyone. Choose which things truly matter to you, and let go of the things that don’t. If you spend less time dwelling on negative thoughts, you open yourself up to receiving happier ones. 

8. Holding grudges

Grudges are associated with anger, hurt and negative feelings toward someone. While you can acknowledge you’ve been slighted, holding onto such overwhelming emotions does not promote happiness. Instead, try to forgive.

Think about why you were hurt. Be empathetic toward the other person, and, if necessary, express your feelings. If all goes well, you’ll both have a deeper relationship and understanding of each other. If not, forgive anyway.

9. Ignoring relationships

In today’s digitally driven world, making time for face-to-face connections is increasingly difficult. But for that reason, it’s increasingly necessary.

Numerous research has proven that people with friends don't just live more fulfilled lives — they also recover from illness more quickly, they have a lower risk of various diseases and they tend to think more positively because they know that they have people to support them.

10. Forgetting to make time for the things you love

What is your passion? Regardless of how silly, small or difficult, be sure to carve out time to pursue activities that bring you joy. Time is always of the essence in today’s world, but you’ll feel a hamster running on a wheel if you don’t stop for a moment to foster the things that you truly love.  

More often than not, happiness is a choice. Hopefully, it’s not a hard one to make. It’s about taking the time to think about what truly matters and making sure you follow through on whatever that may be.

Living a life where you're happier and kinder towards yourself is not just about what you can do.

But also about what you are already doing. And especially those habits that do have a negative and unhappy impact on your life.

So this week I'd to share 9 such habits. And what have helped me a whole lot to do instead.

1. Stop overthinking.

Overthinking can make any issue seem bigger and scarier than it actually is. It can hold you back in life and from taking action.

What to do instead:

Set short time-limits for decisions.

For example: For small decisions if should go and do the laundry, start writing a new article or work out I usually give myself 30 seconds or less to make a decision. 

For somewhat larger decisions that would have taken me days or weeks to think through in the past I set a deadline for 30 minutes or at least for the end of the workday.

Keep a simple reminder where you cannot avoid seeing it every day.

A note that said “Keep things extremely simple” on the white board I saw many times each day helped me greatly to – over time – minimize my overthinking.

2. Stop swimming in the sea of the most negative voices.

Our happiness is greatly influenced by the people and the other sources around us.

If you swim around in a sea of negative people and information that drag you down into fear, frustration and feeling powerless then that will limit your life.

What to do instead:

Figure out what the biggest time-wasters and energy-drains are among all those things that influence you.

  • What 1-2 people drag you and your thoughts down the most?
  • What 1-2 other sources blogs, forums, books, magazines, social media channels and TV-shows have the biggest negative impact?

Write those answers down. Then think about what 1-2 people and 1-2 other sources that lift you up and make you feel happier about yourself and life the most.

Make a decision to spend less time with the 2-4 negative sources and to spend the time you have now freed up with those positive influences you listed.

3. Stop getting stuck in the past or future.

Spending too much time in the past usually leads to going over old mistakes or failures over and over again and to wishing you could go back and do something about them.

And spending too much time thinking about the future usually leads to worries and to building monsters and nightmare scenarios in your mind.

What to do instead:

Spend more of your time in the present moment. You’ll feel lighter, things will feel easier and you’ll be more alert to appreciate the small wonders of everyday life.

Reconnect with what's happening right now by just sitting down and being still. Then either:

  • Just breathe. Spend a couple of minutes on focusing on just your breaths going in and out.
  • Only focus on what is going on around you right now. Do it with all your senses. Listen, see, smell and feel what is happening in your little part of the world at this moment.

4. Stop setting a too high bar for happiness.

A common mistake I used to make was to set a too high bar for my own happiness.

And so I usually only felt happy when I achieved something big, when I did something perfectly or when something unexpected and wonderful happened.

You don’t have to wait for those rare occasions to feel happy though.

What to do instead:

Tell yourself this as you get bed in morning:

Today I will have a low bar for happiness.

To remember to do this, consider writing it down on a note or on your smart phone so you see it first thing in the morning.

By doing so you’ll take fewer things for granted. Your attention will naturally be more on what is happening in your daily life and you’ll be more grateful for the things there.

the food, the weather, hanging out with a friend or a pet for a while, the small gestures of kindness and the small moments that pass by so quickly.

This has at least been my experience with this habit. And it has not decreased my drive to achieve things or to get to done.

Instead it has made daily life lighter to live. And the path to what I want to achieve a happier one to walk on.

5. Stop comparing yourself to other people.

Comparing yourself to other people can easily become a destructive and depressing daily habit.

You compare relationships, cars, careers, bodies and houses and at the end of the day your self-esteem is low and you feel a failure with negativity buzzing around in your head a swarm of irritating bees.

What to do instead:

Compare yourself to yourself. Just see:

  • How much you have grown.
  • How far you have come.
  • The progress you have made towards your goals and dreams.

And don’t forget to celebrate the small successes and steps forward too.

This habit will help you to see yourself from a kinder and more helpful perspective where you feel energized as you appreciate the steps you have taken on your journey.

Instead of feeling drained and powerless to keep growing and to keep going for what you want life.

6. Stop doing things too fast.

When you go fast pretty much all the time while walking, talking, driving or working then you tend to feel more stressed.

Your focus more easily becomes scattered and it becomes harder to think clearly.

What to do instead:

Slow down. Walk, talk, move, drive and work slower. As you you do that:

  • The stress in your body and mind will float away.
  • You’ll naturally be more in the moment.
  • You’ll enjoy all the smells, sights, sounds and experiences of life even more.

7. Stop pushing away how you deep down feel.

It is one thing to focus on what is positive in life.

But it is another thing to try to push away how you deep down feel about something.

And it usually doesn't lead to happiness even if you try to turn on a smile and force the positivity.

What to do instead:

Write it or talk it out.

Don’t force the positive thinking. If you have negative feelings or thoughts that pop up again and again then take some time with yourself to think it through.

A pen and paper or a journal on your computer can help you to think more clearly. Or you can talk about it with someone close to you.

Create a small plan.

After you have accepted and processed how you think and feel about this then write down a small plan – maybe just a step or a couple of them – that you can take action on to move yourself this situation and into something better.

And after that get going and get the ball rolling by taking the first small and practical step forward.

8. Stop spending too little energy and attention on what truly matters to you.

It is easy to get lost and misspend too much of your day and week.

On things you might just do habit or because you feel you should. On busywork or on things that honestly deep down isn’t that important to you.

What to do instead:

Get your priorities in check. Focus on what truly matters for YOU.

Ask yourself: what are the top 4 most important things in my life this year?

Maybe it is your family. Or your hobby and to become a better photographer. Or your health and getting in shape. Or an important project at work or in your own business.

Sit down, really think about it and reduce what matters to just the essentials.

Then take out a pen and a small piece of paper and write down just your top 4 priorities for this year.

Put that note where you cannot avoid seeing it every day. in your work space. Or beside your bathroom mirror or on your fridge.

This will help you to keep your focus on the right track every day.

9. Stop waiting for someone else to make you happier.

Don’t make the all too common mistake of waiting for someone else to create the week, month and year you want to have. That usually leads to much waiting and frustrations.

What to do instead:

Be proactive. Get the ball rolling yourself. Take action and take the first small step forward with making the changes you want to make to create the life you want to live.

  • Set up a coffee date or an evening at the pub with those most positive people in your life.
  • Set the low bar for happiness as you jump or drag yourself bed in the morning and go slow today.
  • Sit down tonight and write down those four most important things for you this year.

And if it feels difficult and you start to procrastinate then remember that you can always take smaller steps forward.

Do whatever is needed to reduce that mental barrier and to get yourself to begin or back into taking action again.

It’s no secret that we all want happiness. After all, we only get life once and we want to make the most of it.

But most of us find that happiness is fleeting. Why? Because we believe that happiness means being joyful, or excited.

Yet these are temporary feelings that don’t last forever. True happiness comes from being at peace with who you are and what you have in life.

Yet, a lot of us have habits that reinforce the former idea of happiness which doesn’t offer permanent fulfillment to our lives.

Here are 27 things you need to stop doing to find fulfillment and happiness in your life.

1) Giving in to fear

Being scared of fear means you’re not accepting your emotions. Fear is an emotion that’s fueled by your imagination.

Danger is real. Fear is a choice.

When you become mindful of your emotions and observe them from a distance, you’ll realize that they’re not really you and there’s nothing to be afraid of.

2) Comparing yourself to others

There’s nothing more useless or damaging than comparing yourself to others. It means that you’re struggling to accept who you are.

But acceptance is crucial if you want to be happy. According to spiritual guru Osho, you need to realize that you’re a unique and beautiful human being and there’s no need to compare:

“You are a masterpiece – unrepeatable, incomparable, utterly unique. Respect your uniqueness, and drop comparison. Relax into your being.” – Osho

3) Hanging around negative people

You know the type of person that wallows in their problems and fails to focus on solutions?

You need to stay away from them. It’s simply a ball of negative energy that feeds on itself.

It’s better to be around people who are authentic, positive and non-judgmental.

4) Trying to impress others

The fact that you’re trying to impress others means you’re not happy with who you are.

You’re seeking validation from outside factors that you have no control over.

And even if people are impressed with you, are you really going to be happy deep down?

The only way to be truly happy is to be impressed with yourself.

5) Complaining

This only serves to reinforce a negative attitude. Sometimes it can help to take a step back and see life for what it is, rather than assigning a negative label to it.

Instead of complaining, try switching the attitude to one of gratitude and appreciation.

6) Criticizing

People tend to criticize others because it makes them feel better about themselves. Yet this is a habit that comes directly from the ego.

All this will do is create a spiral of negativity that will make you more judgmental and unhappy with yourself.

7) Blaming

We need to take responsibility for our own lives to be happy.

Blaming signifies that you aren’t walking life’s path yourself. It’s time to take a step back and look inside yourself instead of blaming others.

8) Isolating yourself

Yes, it’s important to get away from aggressive and toxic people. But you can’t shut everyone off, even when you feel down.

Human beings are social creatures and we all need meaningful and authentic relationships to be truly happy.

9) Immunity to awe

Awe is an amazing emotion that makes you grateful for life as well appreciate the present moment.

One of the best ways to experience awe is to get out in nature. It’s inspiring, full of wonder and reminds us that we’re not the center of the world.

10) Dwelling on the past

The past is gone. The future hasn’t arrived yet. The only thing that matters is the present moment.

Happy people realize this and don’t waste time thinking about what can’t be changed.

11) Remaining in their comfort zone

Progress can’t be made from the comfort zone.

Remaining there isn’t a way to fully embrace life. Instead, a fulfilling life comes from overcoming your fears and experiencing all that life has to offer.

12) Not listening to others

Unfortunately, our ego has a way of protecting itself from the opinions of others. But everyone has something to offer, even if you don’t agree with them.

Happy people realize that they can learn something from everyone.

13) Keeping a closed mind

Nobody knows everything. If you keep a closed mind, then you can’t learn anything new. In order to be fully living and flourishing in life, you need to be constantly learning.

14) Avoiding change

The only constant in the universe is change. Happy people accept this and realize that it’s a waste of energy to fight against it.

15) Letting others make decisions for you

We need to take responsibility for ourselves. Even though there are powerful forces from society and friends that are trying to make decisions for us, we need to take a good hard look within and ask ourselves what we truly want.

16) Getting jealous over the success of others

When others succeed, you should be happy for them. It doesn’t lessen your chances of succeeding or affect who you are in anyway.

There’s no need to compare, we’re all unique.

In fact, it should only give you more motivation to go out and fulfill your desires in life.

17) Thinking about the possibility of failure

In whatever we do, there’s always a chance of a failure. But happy people don’t look at it that way.

Even if they don’t succeed, they realize that there’s always something to be gained when things don’t go the way they expected.

It’s about taking an optimistic view in life.

18) Feeling sorry for yourself

We all go through troubles in life. Life is tough. Happy people fully accept that suffering is inevitable, no matter who you are.

However, they also realize that there’s literally nothing to be gained from feeling sorry for themselves.

18) Focusing on your weaknesses

We all have weaknesses. However, some people can spend so much time dwelling on their weaknesses that they forget that they actually have strengths!

Happy people master a certain skill set and forget about what they struggle at.

19) Trying to please people

A job well done is a job well done, no matter who is judging the final product. You can’t please everybody, but you can always try your best.

20) Blaming others for things outside their control

We need to take responsibility for our lives. People will always exert some influence over our circumstances, but there is no value in blaming then.

Instead, it’s far more fruitful to get on with life and focus on what you can control.

21) Being impatient

I’m sure you’ve heard it before; patient is a virtue. It isn’t that most people don’succeed because they aren’t good enough.

Instead, most people fail because they aren’t patient and think their time has come before it has actually come.

22) Being misunderstood

Communication is key when it comes to human relationships. Happy people do their best to be understood and have the patience to clear up misunderstandings.

23) Feeling the world owes you

Unfortunately life is harsh. It doesn’t really look out for anyone. Instead, it’s up to you to shape your circumstances and find what you’re looking for.

24) Repeating mistakes

It’s okay to make mistakes, but repeating the same mistakes over and over means you’re not learning.

Life is about growth.

25) Acting without calculating

You need to carefully consider your actions and what the results are ly to be. Doing so will enable you to take calculated risks, which is where the real success in life is.

26) Refusing help from others

Our ego has a hard time accepting help, but we all need human relationships and companionship.

That’s what life is about. Helping each other so we ALL can live the life of our dreams.

27) Giving up

We only get life once. Giving up lacks dignity. When it comes to living fully and having no regrets, you need to go all in with what life has to offer.

Before trying to adopt good habits, you would rather pay attention to the bad ones you have accumulated over the years.

Filter out those habits that are not in line with your aspirations, ambitions, and goals. Make sure you do not do the things that hold you back and are not a good fit for a person you would to be.

Here is the list of habits you should quit now in order to become a better person and achieve more.

  1. Do Not Discuss People. Discuss ideas instead.
  2. Do Not Be Jealous. Firstly, it is extremely meanly. Secondly, it makes you look miserable. Thirdly, this feeling has never made anybody happier, luckier or more successful. Get rid of it!
  3. Do Not Compare Yourself With Others. Live your own life and make sure it goes smoothly in the right direction.
  4. Do Not Overwork. Hard work has nothing to do with productivity. Work smarter instead of working harder.
