Let’s get to the roots

It may come as a surprise that there are many supplements being marketed and sold as mushrooms on the shelves today that don’t actually contain any real mushrooms.

These products are almost always made from what’s called myceliated grain, or what mushroom growers call grain spawn.

 There are two types of supplements here, grain spawn, and extracts and it’s extremely important to be able to make the distinction between myceliated grain and true mushroom extracts when buying them for their therapeutic value.

To understand what myceliated grain let's start with mycelium. Mycelium is essentially the root system of a mushroom. It’s made up of thin, wispy white strings and makes up most of the biomass of fungus.

Mycologist, Paul Stamets even coined the phrase, “earth’s natural internet” because of how mycelium forms connections and communicates with the root systems of 90 % of other plant species.

With that said, one of its main functions is to actually transfer compounds beta-d-glucans from soil to fungi and that creates what's called a fruiting body, what we typically refer to as the mushroom we see popping the ground. This mushroom or fruiting body is what holds all of the nutrition and active constituents within fungi which is why it possesses so much medicinal value.

How myceliated grain supplements are produced

Instead of starting with spores, mushroom growers will use a chunk of mycelium and mix it in with any variety of sterilized grain rye, oat, barley, brown rice, etc.

After they’re mixed in together, the mycelium will start to work its way all throughout the medium and this is what's known as grain spawn.

Some producers will stop there and sell that as a supplement without letting the mushroom come to fruit and this is common in the marketplace because it’s essentially a more cost-efficient, simpler process that requires less maintenance and materials.

Now, while this method of production is more cost efficient, it only leaves behind trace amounts of beta-d-glucans (the good stuff) and high amounts of polysaccharides.

The residual grain from seed grain spawn increases polysaccharide content which is then advertised all over the product.

Marketing high polysaccharide numbers give consumers a false sense of quality when in reality most of the product is mainly just starch or gluten found in the grain medium sold with a high price tag.

Polysaccharides may also be advertised as alpha-glucans. This is the same reason why you'll sometimes see a high polysaccharide content on the label for products made up of mushroom grown on grain.

It's due to the alpha-glucan in the grain, not the beta-glucan from the mushroom. Most research conducted on the benefit of glucans is conducted using fungal beta-glucan rather than alpha-glucans.

Here are some common terms manufacturers/producers use to advertise a mushroom supplement that is mycelium grown on grain.

Why you want the beta-glucans

Scientifically, beta-glucans are polysaccharides of sugar molecules. They originate from yeast, fungi, mushrooms, oats, and bacteria.

It’s even been proven that some fungal b-glucans markedly stimulate our immune system to protect us from attack by pathogenic microbes and from harmful effects of environmental toxins and carcinogens. (5)

Supplements made with the whole fruiting body are sometimes referred to as “true mushroom extract” or “full spectrum extract”. Full spectrum is a term used in reference to using the all of the mushrooms and therefore acquiring all of its available compounds.

 Full-spectrum extracts are most commonly produced by hot water extraction techniques where the fruiting body or the mushroom is soaked in hot water that breaks down the chitin on the cell wall.

 Chitin is a primary component of cell walls in fungi where the active compounds are held but it’s tough for our bodies to break down the chitin naturally so using this type of extraction increases the bioavailability of the final product, meaning it will be easier for our bodies to digest and obtain the nutrients.

Extraction methods

As far as extraction goes, there are a couple of different methods used to produce a mushroom supplement. One method that only uses hot water and one that uses both hot water and ethanol, known as dual extraction.

This is usually used to extract non-water soluble compounds found present in some herbs and mushrooms.

For example, Reishi and Chaga have triterpenes that are not water soluble but still important and should be included in supplements.

In a 2007 study conducted by the University of Padova, Department of Biology, 25 men had their gastric juices tested after consuming a form of lab grade chitin in order to see if they are able to process it.

It was shown that only 20% of the patients were found to have good chitinase activity, and another 20% had none at all. The other 60% had poor chitinase activity.

 In the 20% of patients that had absolutely no chitinase activity, the cause is believed to “be a consequence of the virtual absence of chitinous food in the Western diet. (4)

To wrap this all up

The therapeutic effects of mycelium grown on grain can be very unpredictable if not non-existent due to our inability to digest chitin properly. This proves the case of choosing a supplement that was produced with a method of hot water or dual extraction.

 It should be noted however, the terms “dual or hot water extract” may not actually provide any real assurance of quality unless the company can also provide a certificate of analysis from a third party lab.

HOW DID THEY GROW MY SHROOMS?

A fruiting body takes up to 8 months of additional time in larger, more shaded greenhouses to come into existence.  This requires hardwood logs embedded within nutrient rich soil to feed the mushroom with the proper diet it needs to become a strong mature body.

HOW DID THEY PREPARE THEM FOR ME? … OR DID THEY AT ALL?

This may be the million-dollar question of this educational thrill-ride we’re on.  Now, all information leading up to this is also, and obviously, vital for optimal health benefit, but this one could make or break it.

  There are two popular ways of preparing your mushrooms- Powdered or hot water extracted, also noted as spray-dried.  If you see powdered or ground on your mushroom label, you are getting ground mushroom and what it was growing on.

  No big deal?  Well, The polysaccharides that contain the beta glucans, the immuno-modulating compounds that define a mushroom as medicinal, are found inside the cell walls, and they are completely surrounded by an indigestible fiber called “chitin”.

  Chitin is what lobster and crab shells are made from and our digestive system cannot break it down.  When mycelium colonizes the grain, only about half of the grain mixture is consumed because of the metabolic waste that builds, to which the mycelium stops digesting it.

  This makes most, if not all of the powdered mushroom or mycelium products less than a 1:1 ratio because almost half is the undigested rice or wood left by the mushroom.

To re-state that, Mycelium biomass, in the unextracted form, is basically a 1:1, or more accurately, 1/2:1, because that supplement is still half undigested rice.

Hot water extraction requires the dried mature mushroom or mycelium to boil for several hours, possibly for three terms.  Once the bio-available nutrients have been extracted, a low temperature vacuum condenser and air-spray dryer is utilized to turn the liquid to powder.

  The chitin is left with the bones and you are now presented with the optimal bioavailability of the mushroom.  It is also extremely important that you are getting at least an 8:1 ratio.

  That means that eight pounds of actual mushroom nutrient will be condensed into one pound of extract, creating the most fundamentally concentrated supplement available.

Put that in your water and extract it!

This is again a more timely and cost-imposing process, which concludes the reasoning for “getting what you pay for.”

Reishi, for example, was the founding father of this shroom technology.  When Japanese Dr. Yoshi discovered that reishi had chemical components to administer a cure for cancer, the government funded his journey to find the best reishi mushroom and most bio-available form of human intake.

  In result of his journey through China, it was found that Duanwood Reishi was the most potent, and as explained above, hot water-extraction was the most effective preparation.  Duanwood simply specifies certain kinds of hardwood trees indigenous to certain regions of China.

  Duanwood Reishi is actually government-regulated organic, as it is forbidden to use any chemicals or pesticides while growing.

  When buying reishi, you want to make sure it is a dark, reddish brown color, it is hot-water extracted and not ground or powdered, and it tastes bitter! (bitter=better)

10 Facts to Know Before You Buy a Mushroom Supplement (Part 1)

Mushroom supplements: Everything you need to know before buying...

If you are going to spend money on medicinal mushroom supplements, make sure they actually are going to strengthen your immune system. So many products on the market are complete junk. Not only will you be throwing out money by buying them, you will not get better by taking them.

How do you know if a company is supplying quality mushrooms? Look for the following information on the website or product label.

AVOID SUPPLEMENTS MADE WITH MYCELIUM

Products should be made from mushrooms, not mycelium.

Even though the front label may say “mushrooms,” you need to look at the Supplement Facts panel. Does it say Reishi mushroom? Reishi mushroom mycelium? Or Reishi mycelium? Some products will list the latin name, Ganoderma lucidum, without mentioning mushroom or mycelium.

MOST “mushroom” supplement companies in the U.S. market do not source their product from actual mushrooms, but from mycelium instead.

And what is mycelium, anyway? It’s a sterile, lab-grown (usually in cheap plastic bags), vegetative part of the fungal organism. It is grown on grains and is significantly less favorable because it greatly lacks in beta-glucans, the active, beneficial compound in medicinal mushrooms.

Honest companies will reveal if the product is mycelium. They will also state in the “Other Ingredients” that there is grain or myceliated grain.

Good companies will also list the milligrams of each mushroom, though this is extremely rare to find.

On the other hand, dishonest companies love to use “proprietary formula/blend” – a great way to hide that their product is not potent at all, even if they use mushrooms instead of mycelium.

MYCELIUM IS A COMPANY’S WAY TO MAKE MONEY AT YOUR EXPENSE

Mycelium on grain is nothing more than what commercial mushroom growers call “grain spawn.” Grain spawn is not a 

mushroom and definitely not a genuine mushroom product. It is cheap to produce and is therefore economical to grow in North America.

Unfortunately, mycelium grown on grain or rice contains minimal amounts of the important compounds that are in medicinal mushrooms.

Myceliated grain is cheap to produce and often cheap to purchase, but the lack of medicinal compounds makes it gram for gram the most expensive product on the market.

THE BEST SUPPLEMENT TO BUY IS A MUSHROOM EXTRACT

Interestingly, although mushroom powders are superior to mycelium on grain powders, they are still less potent than a concentrated extract.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, which has used mushrooms and herbs for thousands of years, almost always makes a tea from herbs. Tea is a simple water extract.

Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners will boil herbs for long periods of time to extract the medicinal compounds.

A hot water extract is the best way to concentrate mushrooms and at the same time make them more bioavailable.

The combined use of alcohol and water is utilized when some important compounds in the mushroom are not water soluble, such as Reishi or Chaga triterpenoids. However, many companies will use only an alcohol extract, which makes an inferior supplement.

Look for companies that state their mushrooms are hot water extracted. A safe bet – if they don’t state it, don’t buy it. They are ly using ethanol.
